SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS
MONTHLY MEETING. I The Taranaki School Commissioners met yesterday. Present: Messrs Jas. Wade (chairman), W. T. Jennings, 'M.P. and A. Morton. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs 0. E. Major and F. Simpson. Mr. Jennings was granted permission to told over for a fuller meeting his notice of motion regarding the limitation of area of holdings of lands administered Iby the Commissioners. Mi. J. Pierce applied for permission to cut the remaining shelter bush on tne section held by him at Ngaere, formerly occupied by Mr. Blizzard. It was pointed out that this bush, originally reserve, had mostly died out, and would soon become a harbor for weeds.
The secretary reported upon the lvohuratahi road deviation. Mr. Simpson, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, had made full enquiries and asked him to report to the Board his opinion that the Board should not ask the Roads Department for any compensation in respect to the severance.—A resolution was minuted .accordingly. It was decided to call tenders for the lease of section 9, block 10, Omona, 210 acres, which was withdrawn from the recent auction on account of lack of road access.
•It was decided to accept a surrender of section 10, Manganui, and to grant a renewable lease to W. F. McAllum, the present lessee. Mr. H. A. Keighley wrote with reference to a section taken up by 'him about a year ago at auction in New Plymouth. He stated that when the land was offered for lease it was stated that tne Government was opening up the roads to give access to the sections. He had applied to the District Road Engineer, to Mr. Jennings, the member for the district, and to the Minister for Public Works, but he could get nothing done on. the road, although he understood that the money had been voted for the worK. In order to obtain access be had had to buy the goodwill of the adjoining property, at a cost of about £SOO. Under these circumstances, lie asked to lava the land leased to him at the upset rental until the road was made. —The secretary reported; that this was a very desirable section of 512 acres, and that it had been keenly competed for at auction, the price obtained being £65 per annum, as against the upset of £3O 14s. — The Board could not entertain the application. The secretary submitted a schedule of unlettable reserves. After discussion, it was decided to ask Mr. Marchant, the Board's ranger, for a report on these sections.
Mr. H. Halliwell, of Hawera, wrote on •behalf of Mr. C. Goodson, who owned the freehold adjoining one of the Board's reserves at Normanby. He drew the Board's attention to the fact that the (boundary hedge of box-thorn was on his land, and thus the Board's tenant was occupying nearly an acre of his ground. Mr. Goodson was willing to sell the strip of Jand to the Board tor £SO an acre. Otherwise, the boundary would have to be adjusted, the Board" paying half the cost.—lt was decided that the secretary should inspect the property, and report to the Board,
