STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent). Stratford, Last Night. The Independent Opposition candidate for the Auckland East scat, Mr. R. W. Hill, was at one time in the service of the Tarana.ki Education Board, and subsequently a member of the office staff of Mr. T. C. Fookes.
Prior to his departure for Timaru Mr. | J. Bell was .presented by the members of the Stratford Cluib with a case of sil-ver-mounted pipes, and by Mr. R. Spence,' on behalf of various debating societies, with a travelling "hold-all." The sending of reinforcements to the New Zealand footballers in Australia has caused many local Rugiby enthusiasts to wonder if the injury sustained by Jack ( Stohr in the Wellington match was more serious than at first imagined, and in consequence another three-quarter is required. I hear that the newly-formed Egmont Club is considering the question of acquiring a freehold site with the object of erecting a club building . It says a great deal for the enthusiasm for Rugby that in spite of the pouring rain a number of spectators should have turned out to witness the senior football match this afternoon. Had there been a covered-in stand it would not have been so bad, but to stand without shelter shows the hold the New Zealand national game has on the public. Several town sections have changed hands lately, the purchasers having bought with the intention of building.
