MOTOR WAGGON TRAFFIC.

PUNIHO TOLL TARIFF AMENDED. The tariff at the Puniho toll gate was again discussed at yesterday's County Council meeting, and the recommendations of the special committee adopted. I Cr. Andrews moved, according to no-' tico, that the scale of charges be amended so that the five shilling toll on each motor lorry or waggonette or trailer at-| tached thereto be reduced to 2s Od ior! each vehicle. There was no seconder,] and the motion lapsed. j Cr. Allanson moved, pursuant to no] tice, to alter the tariff at the Puniho toll gate, increasing 4-liovsc waggon toll from 2s (id to 3s Od; 5-horsc"waggon, from 3s to 4s; and G-hor.se waggon from 3s Gd to 4s (id; raising the motor car tariff (12 li.p. or over) to 3s <ld, and reducing motor waggons and motor coneli■es from 5s to 3s fid. The mover pointed out that.this would grant a concession, as promised, to the Transport Company, and still conserve the Council's revenue. A suggestion had been made to him that motor cars might be more lightly taxed, but he felt that as these were mostly pleasure vehicles they should pay. His motion embodied the decision of the committee set up to consider the question. Cr. Carter, in seconding, said that the absence of any objection to the proposals, which had been published, seemed to him to indicate that the people concerned were fairly well satisfied with the new tariff, and that they recognised the Council was dealing fairly ° with them. The Council, of course,' had to conserve its revenue, in the interests of ratepayers, and he could not understand how Cr. Andrews, who must be conversant with the very strained position of the finances at that end. should propose '•in one fell swoop" (by the motion which had just lapsed) to reduce the revenue by £9O •Without making any suggestion as to .where else that money could he raised.

Cr. Andrews complained of the a-edue- 1 titm of the motor car tariff. Cr. Carter made a lot: of song about the ridinofinances, hufThere he proposed to induce the fees' oh' motor cars. Upon it being pointed out that the proposal would have the effect of raisin* the charges on this particular class of vehicle, Cr. Andrews said he had quite misunderstood'(the matter, and ejaculated. "Pll 'sfCv-Mto- bore "

After a brief discussion, generally for its very careful consideration of the toll tariff, the motion was put and carried.
