The first part of the last meeting of tlu> W.C.T.U., held oil Wednesday, Ist June, took the form of a memorial service. Reference was made to the grief into which the nation has 'been plunged by the death of our 'beloved King, Edward VII. A cablegram of sympathy was sent to Queen Alexandra by Mrs. Cole, the National President, on behalf of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the following gracious acknowledgment .hail been received:— "Queen Alexandra thanks the W.C.T.U. for its kind sympathy in her sorrow." Deep sympathy was felt for Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Sheppard, of Christchurch, in the death of their only son, which occurred a'- (ilasgnw a few weeks ago. Mr. Douglas Sheppard (a young man of great promise and exceptional ability) was qualifying as an electrical engineer, and held quite a responsible position in the llrm of Siemens Bros. Mrs. Webb (Ormoiidville), .\|i*s .Sadler, .Mrs. H. Lewis, and several other. members were remembered with sincerest sympathy in their (bereavement. Correspondence from the Superintendent of the Sabbath Observance was acknowledged. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Education Board, acknowledging a letter with specimens of temperance wall-sheets forwarded to the Board by the W.C.T.U., asking that the Board instruct the teachers to have these wallslfeets exhibited in the schools. The Board granted the request. The Union has supplied sufficient copies 'for nil the schools in the Taranaki district. An educational paper on the C.D. Acts was read, after which the following! resolution was passed: "That the Premier be urged to introduce a Bill next session repealing the C.D. Acts." The president reported having visited several auxiliary unions during the month and assisted Miss Powell to reorganise the Ha with union. The report on the stall furnished by the W.C.T.U. at the recent bazaar showed that immense energy and labor were put into it to bring about such splendid financial results, considering 'the limited time given for the work. 'About £4O in cash and ,t'lo worth of ,goods will be handed over to the Temperance Hall Committee. Notice was given of the No-License Convention to be held on 3rd June at Eltham. It is hoped many will be tempted by the excursion fares to be present.
