At the criminal sessions of the Auckland Supreme Court to-day, a farmer named Henry James Hansen, wlm civfiled ;i sensation at Xgungurti, in ihiWhangarei district, on 15th April las;, by firing at and wounding ais son. Arthur James Hansen, following upon a family difference, was placed in "he dock charged (1) with attempted murder, and (2) with intent. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, is a middle - aged man «nd a successful farmer. It was alleged against him that his treatment of his wife was not that of a good husband, and in consequence of the troubles that luid arisen, the son Arthur James, who is farming on his own account in the Waikato, visited the household at Ngunguru on 14th April, with the intention of taking liis mother away. The accused objected to this proceeding, and had an altercation with his son. This culminated in the shooting aliray on the following morning. The defence was that the prisoner i.-.-.a no intention of inflicting actual bodily harm, and, further, that the great provocation he had received had unhinged his mind, causing li.m to lose his selfcontrol. The hearing lasted until 10.30 p.m., when the case was adjourned till tomorrow.
