THE SCOTTISH CHURCHES
THE UNION MOVEMENT. GRATIFYING PROGRESS. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright Received June 2, 0.10 a.m. London, June 1. The General Assemblies of t/he Church of Scotland and the United Free Church have instructed the joint committee of union to continue its deliberations and present a complete report at the next assemblies.
Great satisfaction is expressed at this decision, and the committee conferred during the year without coming to an impasse. The Rev. Norman Macleod and Lord Balfour of Burleigh were optimistic. Dr. George Robson, of the United Free Assembly, stated that the joint committee had agreed that it was not just that the law should recognise the Established Church and not)' the other churches. That they should be in agreement up to this .point was a hopeful skm. The chief difficulty would be to frame conditions of union in no way infringing the Free Church's spiritual independence.
