Taverner, interviewed by ilie Standard of Empire, stated thai ne uid not attend the Emigration Conference because his staff and the Victorian Government's agents in Britain were quite competent to deal with the emigration policy without outside interference. It was not for Mr. Kinloch Cooke to dictate the policy certain states shall adopt in regard to emigration.
Unlike Sir F. W. Tayerner, Mr. Cogh-j lan and others Agents-General furnished; wit'.i conference with particulars askedj for regarding the class of settlers which their States desired, and the details of the facilities and assistance offered to immigrants, as well as to lands available. Mr. Hall-Jones furnished similar information. Mr. McCall, Agent-General for Tasmania, stated that he was in sympathy with the conference, but it was undesirable that official representatives) should partake in an unofficial gathering. BRITISH GOVERNMENT PROTESTS. Received June 2, 0.30 a.m. London, June 1. The Times' Toronto correspondent reports that the Britisli Government mis protested to the Canadian Government against the immigrant regulations repuiring that new arrivals (except farm lalborers) shall (have £5 and a stated sum for each member of a family.
