THE WINTER SHOW.
MEETIXG OF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Winter Show Committee wins held in the secretary's office last night. There were present: Messrs. Ambtiry (president), F. Watson, Elliott, (5. IV. Brown, Jackson, an<l Sole. A telegram was read from the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, stating that he would, if possible, visit the district and open the show. Additional stewards were appointed: Heine cookery, S. J. Smith and E. Firth; farm .produce. .1. J. Elwin; machinery •section, A. Cliff, 11. Street, and A. N. Mills. A letter was received from Mr. I). Cuddie, Director of Dairy Produce, stating that he woul I lie glad to arrange for a .judge for the winter show, as Mr. Thornton, who was on holiday, would not 'he available. He suggested that three judges lie appointed instead of one. Mr. Ouddie remarked that as a general rule butter made for competition at shows was sp'cwally manufactured and the diflerent, .exhibits ran much closer in quality than hutter which was sent in for grading. Hi- experience had been that competition was becoming keener, and in some ea'ses it w«s most difficult to discriminate between the merits of exhibits. .Indies would bp selected from the graders at Pa tea and New Plymonth. The president said this was a distinct compliment to the butter manufactured in the distri"(. and it was resolved that the offer of three judge s W accepted. The -following'were thanked for donations:—Messrs. E. Whittle £2 2s, W. Little £2 2s. dames Tuthi',l t)2 2s, C. Clarke Vf2 2s. McKean £2 2s. F. Gather .CI Is, Smith and Hawkins £ 1 Is. The Borough Council's offer to lend any material that would he required for lighting purposes wns accepted. Mr. W. A. Ballantyne, Director of Technical Classes, wrote that the technical instructors would assist with the technical sections at the short. Miss McDonald had consented to take charge of the technical section in cookery, arid would send forward a srood exhibit from the school classes. Mis* McDonald regretted that she could not give a demonstration. The chairman reported that the executive had called tenders for the necessary iron, and will erect the fence. The tender of Messrs. Berry .mil Co. was accepted for the supply of iron. The following committee will allocate special prizes:—Messrs. P. Watson, A. W. Woods, S. .1. Smith, and the president. i The Taranaki Oarrison Band will assist at the opening on Wednesday night j and .provide a programme on Friday night. The Orchestral Union will provide a programme for Thursday night, and Mr. W. Perry's orchestra, on Saturday night. The question of insuring the exhibits was left in the hands of Mr. F. Watson and the secretary. The following new members were elected:—Mos-rs. T. (!. Hirst, A- Duller, •T. McLeod. J. Ingley, W. Ingley, and E. D. Ansford. Anv jwiods on exhibition that may be donated by the exhibitors to the society will he auctioned on Saturday night. Mr. S. Shaw will be asked to* conduct the auction. A general meeting of the committee and stewards will be held on Tuesday night in the Drillshed.
