SUSPECTED ARSON.
| AN ARREST .MADE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, May 28. What is alleged to be a deliberate attempt to destroy bv fire an unoccupied two-storeyed building, known art Butler's Hotel, occurred in the small hours of this morning, when sm»ll outbreaks were discovered in six different parts of the building. Alter the police had succeeded in extinguishing the flames, which fortunately had not attained serious dimensions when the trouble was' notified, they made a search and found crouched behind a wash-house door a young man named William Hunt, of Cox street, Ashburton. Hunt gave an unsatisfactory account of his 'presence, and was arrested. At Court, he was remanded tiJl June 1, bail in £2OO not being forthcoming. Accused is a porter at Somerset Hotel, and is not known to have been in trouble before.
