The case in which Powelka was "I charged with the murder of Police-Ser-jigeant McGuire was concluded on Saturday. The addresses of counsel lasted all the morning, and his Honor summed up for two hours. The jury retired at 4 p.m., 'and at 5.55 returned a verdict of "not guilty'' owing - to there not bein«? sufficient proof. A rider was added to the effect that the evidence, conclusively proved that Detective Quartermain's shot did not kill McGuire. The prisoner maintained his cool demeanour until the verdict was given. ' when ihe was seized with a severe lit of trembling. Powelka did not speak, and on being removed to an ante-room quickly recovered. There was a demonstration by the public. It is understood that the balance of the charges will be heard on Wednesday.
