Professor Koch,'who was born in 1843, ■was eminent in the fields of bacteriology. •He discovered the bacilli of phthisis, and rc-ade extensive researches in regard to (the cause of the sleeping sickness of Africa and the cause of cholera. He held several scientific .positions, and was one of the world's most distinguished scientists.
