POWELKA ON TRIAL
THE DEFENCE CONCLUDED. INTERESTING EVIDENCE. By .Telegraph—Preis Association. hilmerston North, Last Night. Powelka's detenco was concluded today. Evidence of a varied character was given. It was attempted to show that accused could not have been in Palmerston on Saturday night in time to commit the theft a.t Mrs. Farland s. A witness gave evidence that Detective Quartermain .purchased ammunition from the United Farmers' Co-operative Association on the Monday following the tragedy; but on evidence being brought that the detective was on the Foxton line at the time, witness admitted a doubt as to the identity. Dr. Wilson gave interesting evidence that Quartermain, after the tragedy, was excited and told him that he hail heard deceased cry out; had returned and seen a. flash, which he fired at, and McGuire fell back against the house. Rebutting evidence was brought as to the alleged purchase of ammunition by Detective Quartermain, proving that at the time he was not in Palmerston. Counsel will sum up to-morrow morn-
