POWELKA ON TRIAL
the murder i.nak;;'-:. ACCUSED EXCITED. •' - YOUR HONOR. IT'S A LIE." By Telegraph —Press Association. Palmerston North, Afay 20. The hearing of the charge of murder against Powelka was continued to-day, the whole day being taken up in the hearing of the evidence for the Crown. Nothing fresh transpired, except that a difficulty arose as to the relative weights of the bullets in Powelka's and Detective Quartermain's revolvers. The Court adjourned at 4 o'clock to allow a thorough test of the weight of the bullets to be made.
The defence is to be heard to-morrow, and, it is understood, a considerable amount of evidence will be brought forward. Powelka made a scene when Constable Gallagher gave evidence as to words spoken by accused after his capture at the same point in the evidence as at the time lie made ;>. demonstration in the lower Court, his face working and being intensely white. Ho rose to his feet and called out, "Your Honor, that is a lie!" He was then pulled to his seat, and remained quiet during the rest of the proceedings.
