AMUSEMENTS.

HEWITT PICTURES. Despite counter attractions ami wet weather, the Hewitt Pictures continue to prove a strong magnet of -'.ttraction to those in search of amusement, and last nisrht was another proof of the (popularity of this healthy entertaiiir nient. The programme, which is a long and varied one, comprises dramatic, scenic, educational, and comic studies, and bristles throughout with fun ami excitement. In the dramatic series ''The Heir of Clavencourt Castle" stands out alone, the setting being of the most gorgeous nature one can well imagine, and in the banquetting, scene one gets an idea of what it must cost to produce such exquisite pictures. Of the other dramas, "Into the Shadow" and "The Goddess of the Sea" may well be ranked as "stars." eaah picture being of very hig.h merit. The "scenic" subjects include a magnificent film by Pathe Frercs giving the spectators an excellent impression of the "Rhine Waterfalls."] and the sunset scene should not be missed by lovers of scenery. "Calino's riiv Extinguisher." "Too Busy to Court." and "Refractory Postage i Stamp" were clever comic conceptions that touched the risibilities of the audi- 1 enee at various soft points. "The White 1 Sea Fisheries" is one of the best yet! seen in industrial pictures, and portrays j splendidly life on an ocean trawler. The; music for this programme is selected] with care, and appropriate pieces are played to each .picture. The violin andi cornet solos during the dramas were very fine. There will be a children's matinee on Saturday at 2.30.
