TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Wanganui steeplechase meeting will be concluded to-day. Arthur Ohiver rode two winners, Boanerges and Ambrosian, on Tuesday. Compass quickly tailed off in the Centuvy Hurdles, and was the last horse to pass the judge's box. On Tuesday's running it looks as if Tarn Olen ouwht to be dealt with under the Noxious Weeds Aft. Mr. Coombes sent big fields away to splendid starts on Tuesday. This scribe has never seen better starting. Punters had a bad time on the opening day at Wanganui, and those parasites who get their living on the edces of the race crowd, the organists of the ibarrel variety and the "one-man-band," left early in disgust and poverty. They say that Clemency was well supported by the stable for the hack hurdles on Tuesday. The chestnut would not gallop a yard, and tailed off all the'way. Many of the pencillers, to quote their own words, "never wrote Clemora's name" in the Connelly Handicap. Ben Deeley rode a waiting race on the St. Clement's horse, and, coming fast on the outside at the distance, won nicely by nearly a length.
Backers of Parable might note that that ipracl was 'bracketed with Maori King on the tote iin the Connelly nandicaip, and they are therefore entitled to second dividend. The coupled horses carried just a trifle more money than .Sir Antrim when the tote-hell stopped rintaing. Betting on the Kaitake Hurdles was worth mentioning. Maharanui opened hot-stuff. Charlie Cochrane had 'the mount, and, it was whispered, a moral. At the last minute the heads went for Merr.ie Lawn, and the Merriwee gelding closed second 'favorite. Maharanui performed very badly, and was a long way in the rear all the way. Merrie Lawn flew in! The 'big hurdle race was robbed of considerable interest by the defection of Continuance and 'Paisano. The Hawke's Bay pair contracted influenza the evening before the meeting, and their starting was out of the question. Faunus and Golden Loop were the only ones accorded much support in the Electric Handicap, and the pair had the race to themselves. Faunus made the ipace torrid from the jump, and although Golden Loop rattled up gamely under the whip at the finish, the paeemai<er still had enough left in him to win by over a length. They say that Oryx was ridden to instructions in the Wanganui Steeple. Well, the advice tendered must have been of the very worst. The Apremont geldirtoi was kept behind all the way. and instead of improving his position half-a-mile from home was just allowed to jog along half-a-dozen (or more) lengths behind Jack Pot and Lovell. Not until well in the straight was he given his .head, and he then came with a big run. ; .going nearly two to his opponents' one. But the effort was badly timed, and he was still three lengths ■fro mthc winner at the finish. Eldorado appeared to be short of a ■o-allop, and Bullworth had to be pulled up through his saddle slipping. The Bulldog welding was going great guns when the mishap occurred. Sir Lethe swerved at the first jump and went right
oyer the wing of the hurdle on to the outside track. There was no way of getting back on to the course, .so he had to give up the chase. Mocassin and Pharos broke down early in the race. Panda is still running with bad luck. She made a game effort to keep with Boanerges in the Borough Handicap, but had to be content with second place once again. Old Ballarat finished a long way in the rear in the Borough Handicap, and it appears as if the old mare has at last done her dash. Jenkins could not hold Penates in the first six furlongs of the Connelly Handicap, and the horse must always be worth a bet over sprint distances. He was quite pumped out at the end of «. mile, and finished last. iSt. Bill is in good nick, and will show up very shortly, lie ran well on Tuesday, aiid it looked as if he could have igot second if they were anxious for it. Wimmera simply made no race of the Century Hurdles, being right out in front from the rise of the harrier. Waitarm ran about fifth all the way, but was under the whip lialf-a-mile from home. Audax made a game effort to reach the flying Wimmera 'before entering the straight, Imt the leader easily held his own, and finished full of running.
