TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held last night. There were present: Messrs Jas. Wade (chairman), G. A. Adlam, J. Young, W. C. Cargill, H. Trimble, W. L. Kennedy, A. H. Halcombe, Wm. Rogers and A. Morton. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT.
The cliairman reported that the following appointments had been made:— Warea, head teacher, Mrs. M. C. Barak; Kahui, sole teacher, Mr. F. B. Maunder; Kaimiro, temporary assistant, Miss M.Fowler; Koru, temporary teacher, Miss. M. Viekers. Permission had been granted the following schools to curtail the mid-day recess iby half an hour and close at 3 p.m. during the winter months:—tigmont Village, Ruapuha, Korito and Waiongona. The contract time for the Newall reaa school had heen extended for one montn. A defect in the plans of the proposed Technical School at Inglewood having Ibeen pointed out iby the committee, the architect had been instructed to navfc it amended. He recommended that the transfers of Mr. Turkington from Mahoe and Mrs. Warner from Raupuha he deferred till the teachers are classined.— The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee's report was adopted as follows: — Frankley—The application of the committee to substitute concrete floors Tor cesspits was granted. Stratford.—Tenders are to be eaiied for additions to the District High iSchool. Whangamomona. —That an application he made to the Department for the erection of a school, and that the Hall Committee's letter asking for increased rental he also forwarded to the Department. Fitzroy.—The committee are to he informed that new desks will he supplied, but that the attendance does not warrant an application to the Department for additions to the school. Huirangi.—The application for repairs to the residence was referred to the chairman. The inspector is also to report on the state of the desks at the school. Hurford and Pukeho—The committees will be granted the usual subsidy of £2 for £1 for the erection of a shelter shed. Kaimata.—Application for a grant towards fencing was left in the hands of Mr. Morton, with power to act. Lincoln.—Application for a grant of £3 towards the cost of fencing was acceded to. The committee are also to r oe informed that the Board considers it useless to apply to the Department for a grant for a new residence or to shift the present residence. Douglas.—The committee are to be informed that as soon as a site can ibe obtained an application will be made to the Department for a grant for tne erection of a new ibuilding. .
Overseer. —That in consideration of the overseer .providing an additional conveyance for use in carrying out the work of the Board he be granted an addition to his salary of £25 per annum. CLASSIFICATION SCHEME. Mr. W. A. Ballantyne, Chief Inspector, reported that he visited Wanganni on the Oth inst. for the purpose ot enquiring into the working of Uie classification scheme in operation in that district. Altogether the visit proved extremely profitable, and the information gathered should he of very great help to the inspectors in drawing up a classification scheme for the district. He had to thank Mr. Braik, the Chief Inspector, for the trouble he went to in placing his services at Jiis disposal and supplying information. It was resolved that a vote of thanks be tendered to Mr. Braik for his courtesy to Mr. Ballantyne. SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
A. Shaw, Te iviri, protested against the election of tne Te Kiri school committee on the grounds that one member (Mr. C. H. Hurst) lives outside the'Te Kiri school district, and that another member (Mr. R. Thomas) is neither a householder, parent or guardian. Mr. Shaw is to be informed that after due enquiry the Board cannot uphold his .protest. Mr. W. B. Cox protested against the Hurford election on the grounds that the chairman of the householders' meeting refused to accept his nomination. — It was resolved that a copy of the chairman's reply be forwarded to Mr. Cox with an intimation that the Board cannot uphold his protest. Oakura.—Mr. F. J. Morris wrote protesting against this election on the grounds that the voting was irregular. He forwarded the voting papers in sunport. From ia perusal of these it could be seen that several of the householders tan exercised their seven votes by giving their favorite candidates two and even three votes instead of, as allowed by the Act, only one vote. Members of the Board were of opinion that Mr. Morris, as chairman of the meeting, had the matter in his own hands at the time, and should not have counted those papers. It was resolved that the protest be upheld and a fresh election be held. DEPUTATION. Messrs Maekav and Knox, on !>cna!f of the settlers of the district, asked the Board to erect a school on the school site at the junction of the Stanley and Ae'kland roads. There wove eleven children of school ago and cloven others coming on. The children now had from four to seven miles to ride to get to the present Stanley road school, and it was n very dangerous road for children to rulo over. There had already been two or three accidents, in reply to Mr. Cargill. the deputation stated that the settlers would be prepared to guarantee any difference between the amount of capitation and the minimum salary required by «, teacher. It was resolved that the necessary application forms be forwarded to Messrs Knox and Mackay. GENERAL. It was resolved that in future a copy of each inspection and examination report be forwarded separately to each teacher and committee. The appointment of the following members of school committes was confirmed: —Pungarehu, Noho Te AVhiti; Toko, Mr. Henderson; Tar.urutangl, Mr. (t. Rogers. Mrs. Douo'las (president) and Miss Ambury (secretary) of tile Woman's Christian Temperance Union, forwarded some s-i.mnles of wall sheet-, and asked the IVard to instruct teachers to have the same exhibited in school-rooms.—The request was acceded to. The Rowan school committee are to be requested to get their tank stand attended to at once and the screen repaired. Resignations were received from Messrs 11. Morsr-nn (Upper Mangorei) F. B. Maunder (Kahui Road) and Miss E. (iilison (Kaimiro).
