Many New England cotton mills are curtailing their production 25 to 33 per cent, until the new crop is avail able. A STUDENT'S CRIME. Rome, May 20. A student at the Palermo Lyceum shot a professor for refusing to give him full marks at the quarterly examination, and then committed suicide. The professor is not likely to recover. The crime is traced to the criminal associations of students formed for the purpose of intimidating professors. OIL ENGINES FOR THE NAVY. London, May 20. The Admiralty has ordered an oil engine for the Leith, of ten thousand horse power. If it is successful live others will be ordered. A CYCLIST INJURED. London, May 20. Allan Woodman, a New Zealander, whilst training for a motor cycle race ; at the Isle of Man, met with a collision and fractured his leg. Y.W.C.A. CONFERENCE. Berlin, May 20. The World's Conference of the Young Women's Christian Association has opened at Berlin in the presence of the Empress and 850 delegates from 22 countries. WAGES IN AMERICA. New York, May 20. The Erie Railroad has adopted the wages agreement for conductors and trainmen slightly under the Baltimore and Ohio scale. INVESTIGATION OF CORRUPTION. New York, May 20. The Senate adopted a measure providing for a general investigation of legislative corrupt practices.
