OLOSE OF CONFERENCE. IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Secondary Schools Conference j closed last evening. j A committee consisting of the president and Messrs. Bevan, Brown, Moreland, Dave, Morrelil and Tibia, was appointed to consider the present method of selecting Rhodes scholars, and to obtain information of the methods adopted elsewhere and report to next conference. A resolution was carried, affirming the desirability of domestic science forming part of every girl's education. Resolutions were adopted that the Minister of Education be requested to amend the Act by embodying the principle that the .pension be computed on the highest salary received during any three consecutive years instead of the la*t three years of service. That the Minister's attention be drawn to the anomaly which prevents a teacher in the service before the passing of the Act from coming under its provision, unless appointed to a new position. That secondary school teachers be allowed to retire at an earlier .age than after forty years' service. That the amount per head available for secondary education in New Zealand is insufficient to pay adequate salaries for work done or to encourage the best teachers to take up secondary education as a career in life. Tljat this conference should have a representative member on the University Senate, and the Minister of Education be approached on the matter. That there is urgent need for an increase in the .proportion of teachers to pupils in secondary schools, and that the number of assistants should not be fewer than one for 1 every twenty-five pupils. Tt was decided to hold the next conference in Christchurcli, the Standing Committee to determine whether it be held in 1012 or the following year.
