STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Resident Correspondent.) •Stratford, Last Xi»ht. Sonic little time ago I had occasion to refer to tilie length of time which frequently ensues l>efore a business man who is having his goods forwarded | through New Plymouth receives them, j It was subsequently intimated that the j Union Company were considering the question of the improvement of the existing steamer schedule, .but from all appearances the matter is still receiving '"due consideration." A business man gave me an instance to-day of the delay that still exists. On 21st April goods were shipped from Wellington for New Plymouth. After a tri.p down the West Coast of the other Island to Greymouth they finally arrived in New Plymouth on Thursday last, but up to the present have not arrived in Stratford. It is delays of this nature which are doing the reputation of .sew Plymouth as a port considerable >harm with the business community in this part of the district. I am ipleased to (hear that the Mayor proposes ito call a meeting of those interested in the formation of a Chamlier of Commerce in Stratford for the night of Thursday, 2Gth instant. It is to ae hoped thait the movement will meet with the support of all sections of tlie community, for if there is one institution above another required in Stratford it is a live Chamber of Commerce. With the growth of the town and development of the district that has taken place during the last few years there is plenty to do, and if town and country combine in their efforts the district should have cause to be grateful to the Mayor for taking the initial step towards the creation of a Chamber of Commerce. Bags of game are bi><rniiir.u: to make their appearance, and the busiest 1 have heard of so far .have 'men 2li and 24 pheasants. From all accounts game is fairly plentiful, .pheasants especially being in large numbers. The Stratford school committee have made a grant of £3 3s to the Bayly Memorial Scholarship. The Stratford school committee have been unable to obtain a rebate of the duty paid on tihe flag presented to the school by tl.e scholars of Stratford-on-Avon. 4.-.
