TARANAKI PROVINCIAL CONFER- ' . ENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Eltham, Last Night. The annual Turanaki Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union opened to-day and passed a resolution of sorrow, at the death of the King and adjourned til'l the afternoon. The annual report showed an improve- ' ment in the position of the Union ill Taranaki. Three new branches "were started during the year and four resuscitated. In some parts of the province, where there was room for (branches, there was not sufficient support to justify their formation. The influence of the Union made itself felt in various questions, nnd refwemc was made to the youth of the Union and its increased activity, particularly in Auckland and Wellington provinces, and a hope was expressed that Taranaki would continue to do its share in extending the scope and influence of the Union. Mr. J. W. Jones was re-elected president, and Mr. E. Maxwell representative! at the Dominion Conference. Remits were agreed to, urging the withdrawal of the condition in tho grnnts for roads and bridges tihat expenses of engineering and supervision 1)0 charged against the local body.
