CHINAMAN FINED. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, May 13. Wong Lee, for keeping a gamrng house, was fined £3O or three months' imprisonment, at the Magistrate's Court to-day. j FORCING THE BAND OF A MAGISTRATE. Ashburton, Last Night. At the Ashburton Magistrate's Court oil February 4, the Inspector of Awards proceeded against a local manufacturer on a claim for £lO as penalty for failing to pay wages ocf an employee weekly, as provided 'by section 4 of the Canterbury furniture awa.rd. Mr. V. G. Day, S.M., then dismissed the case on the ground that the penalty fixed 'by the award was in excess of that fixed by the Wages Protection Act. The inspector applied to the Supreme Court for and was granted a writ of mandamus directing the Magistrate to liear and determine the case, which therefore came up for hearing again to-day. The S.M. entered judgment for plaintiff Inspector of Awards for 20s.
