It is related of Fred Archer, .the famous English .jockey, that he rode with an ungainly and awkward-looking stooo. When on his American tour he one morning entered Central Park in Noo York on 'horseback and his queer seat in the saddle attracted the attention of two Yankee sportsmen. c *lf that fellow don't mind," said one of the Yankees to his companion, "he'll fall oil'. He can't ride a bit." "Think so?" said the other. "Yaas; it's a certainty." "Then 1 guess your certainties ain't of iiri.-h ;h- old ;hoss, for that's ;■ redd-y Archer!" I Apropos of the withdrawal of Frank Woot ton's riding license for two months, it may be said that that youngster's ability to ride better than most of his fellows made his enemies in England last season. A sportsman at present in Sydney remembers that on one occasion, while returning by train from a race meeting in England, one of the most successful jockeys there remarked to some other members of the profession who were in the same carriage that this "Australian kid" would have to be got rid of. But in a corner of the carriage, and unnoticed, and apparently absorbed in an afternoon paper, was J. E. Brewer, an ex-Australian trainer, who, having heard the whole of the conversation, informed young Wootton's enemy that a jockey who -gave utterance to such a threat was not a person fit to hold a riding license, and he regarded it as his ,duty to bring the offender before the English Jockey Club. But he was persuaded not to go that far iby the .offending jockey making ,all sorts of apologies, and professing that lie had not made the remark seriously. In the end, he caused Brewer to think that the remark was merely idle talk, and the incident closed there. But some months later Brewer was forced to the conclusion that in letting the matter drop he blundered.
