EG MONT VILLAGE. (From Our o>vvn Correspondent.) On Tuesday evening last the initial club night of the Cribbage Club was celebrated hv a single-banded crib tournament held in the hall. Twentysix iplayers 'participated. The prizes were won bv —H. H. Olson 1, D. Price 2, H. L. Marsh 3. Rules drawn up by the committee were discussed and adopted and a team of 16 players selected to represent the Village against Inglewood on Tuesday next. The first meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society's opening session was held in the supper-room of the hall on Thursday evening. There were 15 members present and Mr. A. Morton, president of the .Society, occupied the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs M. Rudd and M. J. Marsh were elected new members of the Society. The (programme for the evening (impromptu speeches) was then proceeded with. The committee had previously arranged a number of subjects, whicli were put in a liat, from which the following were drawn: "Should this Dominion's name be altered from New Zealand to Maoriland? Voting, affirmative 2, negative, 13; "Should colonial .public men accent titles?"— Affirmative 7, negative 7 (the chairman gave his casting vote in favor of the affirmative side of the question); "Will the English language eventually become the .universal language of the .human race?"— Affirmative C, negative 8; "Will the Boers become political masters of United South Africa?"— Affirmative -2, negative 12; ''Was New Zealand habited by a race of people previous to the advent of the Maori or the race he conquered?"—AHirmativfe 3, negative 12. The ranee of subjects drawn was sufficiently great to give all present plenty of opportunities for joining in the debate and some interesting and keen discussions took place. For an opening night, the results were decidedly satisfactory, and there is every prospect that the Society will receive very firm local support and prove even more successful than last year. The programme for the next meeting caused considerable discussion, and after two amendments had been lost, the, following resolution was put before the meeting and carried, on the casting vote of the cnairman:—"That the programme for the next fortnightly meeting of the Society 1>" 'Reading and Recitations,' without criticisms, a ballot to be taken at the end of the evening for first, second and third places, in order of merit. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. The Salvation Army has commenced a series of meeting to be held in the Mission Hall, and to continue through the winter. During recent months their ranks have been augmented by the initiation of several recruits, and the present movement (promises to be an unqualified success.
