OCEAN MAIL STEAMERS
WELLINGTON REPRESENTATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Following upon the resolution passed c;i Monday evening by the Council or the Wellington Chamber of Commerce on the of ocean mail services, a letter in which the views of the Council were fully set out. was sent to the Postmaster-General to-day. In it the Council stated that it is strongly in favor of the maintenance of the existing arrangement for. a weekly service to the United Kingdom, via Sydney and Suez, and protested against any suggestion for its abandonment. The cost of the service was moderate, and its regularity and reliability made it a valuable and satisfactory arrangement for the Dominion as a whole. No service at longer than weekly intervals could take the place of the existing arrangement..
The 'Council also stated its opmion that if the . Government contemplated tlie voting of additional subsidies for tlie improvement of the mail services, they could not be better bestowed than O'n the direct lines of steamers which liad for so long carried on direct trade between New Zealand and Great Britain. It would be a great advantage if, in return for a reasonable subsidy, certain of the best of (the steamers could he set aside as mail Jboats under responsibility to leave the nort of departure and arrive at their on definite dates. Such i service would be attractive to touristslml immigrants, as well .".:"■• of cprgo
