monthly meeting. The usual monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held on Wednesday. There -were present: Messrs 0. A. Marchant '(chairman), W. Marfell, S. '.M. Porritt, R. H. Cameron, W. L. Kennedy, A. Meredith, S. Ward, and 1). K. Maxwell. INSURANCE. Mr. Porritt asked on what grounds the Board had decided to transfer the insurance on the hospital building. The company that had it previously had been "let in" 'for £BO or £9O for damages caused by a fire and it was not fair to them to have the insurance removed unless there iwere strong grounds lor it The chairman said he was always in favor of all public .bodies insuring in the (State office. Members said there was no reason for the change other than that tuny thought the insurance should go round a little. Several members stated that they would not have voted for a change had' they known about the lire and there was some talk of re-opening the question, but the secretary stated that the resolution had already been given effect to. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs Porritt, Cameron and Ward, visiting committee, in their report, drew attention to, the state of the grounds in front of tlfe hospital and recommended that steps be taken to improve ir.em. In speaking 'to the ireport. Mr. Ward stated that the appearance of the "■rounds was an eyesore. If the committee were given power they 'could go into detail and bring down a report at next meeting as to the cost of levelling and Haying down in grass. They also suggested planting a belt of pines on the road side for shelter purposes. Die report was adopted and the committee ■.riven power 'to report re improvements. The matter, of iproviding a shed for the gardener was also left in their hands.
MATRON'S (REPORT. The matron (Miss M. O. Buirn) reported that Nurses Lyall and Walker had returned. The uniforms oi the nurses required renewing. Something also required to be done to prevent rain coming in at the back door. The steriliser required repairing and a cupboard from dressings was required. The question of uniforms was left in the matron's hands and the other matters will be attended to toy the chairman and visiting committee. MEETING PLACE. On the motion of Mr. Ward, it was resolved that owing to pressure of space the Board in future meet in the Counwi Chambers. BALANCE-SHEET. The secretary stated that the balance sheet had come back with two tags, one showing that the Board had no right to use £839 lis loan money to redact the overdraft and the other stating that the £5 for the special meeting at New New Plymouth to meet the inspectorGeneral'of Hospitals and the Minister was illegal. The 'ichairman said they were hardly worth comment. The first was a mere matter of book-keeping and in the second case they went to Now Plymouth at the Minister's special invitation, and while there appointed a matron. Moreover, the auditor had evidently not taken into consideration the fact that one per cent, of their revenue j could be used in 'these expenses.
GENERAL. The report re telephone to the chairman's residence 'was not ryet ready. Xotice was received from the In-spector-General of Hospitals of the appointment of Mr. A. Meredith as member of the Board. The Tourist Department could grant no allowance on charges in connection with a local patient sent to Rotorua. The secretary reported that a man had 'been sent in 'to the Old People's Home at Xew Plymouth and a woman from Cardiff to the annexe. The tender of L. IRevell for carting coal was accepted. Accounts to the amount of £145 Is 4d were passed for payment.
