OBITUARY

MR. STEWART McGUINX.ESS. Very general regret is felt throughout North Taranaki at the death of Mr. T. S. McGaiinness, in Auckland, at the comparatively early age of forty-four years. "Stuart" was a Taranaki boy. the son of Mr. Thos. McGuinness, of'this town, and he spent nearly all his life in the province. In early 'life lie was engaged for some time on survey work, and afterwards took up farming pursuits, wnich he relinquished later on in order to devote his attention to racing. He owned several racehorses. With the late Mr. J. J. Russell he owned Waiuku, the winner of the New Zealand Cup, in 1887. He. was also the owner of Lady Fisher and the. Birkenhead—Lady Fisher colt which recently sold in Australia for 800 guineas. Mr. McGuinness soon became prominent in racing circles, and for srrae years acted as a steward of the Taranaki Jockey Club. He was president, too, of the North Taranaki Hunt 'Club, aud a most enthusiastic member of the hunt. Whilst still retaining his interest in the sport, he went into the rctel-keeping business, and successfully conducted the Moturoa and Urenui Hotels. Unfortunately, during the past three years he was in very indifferent health, ami suffered a very severe illikss. Hearty <rood wishes were extende>i to him. and there was n fcolinjr of vvy general pleasure when "Stuart" was seen about again. With restoration of health he returned to the land, farming a big block at Uruti. and was elected to the Clifton County Coimil. A few weeks ago his health broke down, and he passed away yesterday at Auckland, \\\r death regretted by 'all who knew him. He leaves a widow and one son. The body will be brought to New Plymouth for interment, arriving here by steamer on Monday morning.
