POLYNESIAN SOCIETY
A meeting of the council of the Polynesian Society was held at the Technical School on Wednesday atternoon. The president, Mr. S. Percy Smith, was in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. W. W. Smith, M. Eraser, J. H. Parker, F. P. Corkill, W. L. Newman and W. H. Skinner (secretary/. The following new members were elected:—Messrs. A. Leverd (Tahiti), T W. Dowen (Wanganui), J. H. Burnett (Wanganui), Tho. Lamb (Wairoa), and Professor Dr. Karl Von Den Steineu. (president of the Anthological Society of Germany. It was reported that for the necessary cliarter to name the society- the "Royal" Polynesian Society, a heavy fee would have to be paid, but the president was asked to continue his efforts in this direction, the council 'being of opinion that liaving such a charter would lead to a greater number of additional subscribers, thus recouping the Society for the expense incurred.
It was also reported that in aftout six months' time the "History of the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand," which has been appearing in the journal from time to time, would ba published in book form. The president suggested that members bring the matter prominently before the general public, so that those people desirous could procure a copy of this historical book.
