EARL GREY'S FAREWELL

LAURIER'S TRIBUTE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Received May 5, 1.20 a.jn. Ottawa, May 5. Sir W. Laurier, Prime Minister, in moving a farewell address to Earl Grey, deprecated the agitation that a Canadian should be appointed ,'to the Gover-nor-Generalship. ' This misguided expression of national pride might mean a change from a system whereby great British statesmen jwho represent the King might jeopardise something we hold very dear. The present system strengthens the ties binding Canada to the Motherland and keeps itliem constantly in the hearts of the people. The Governor-General not being connected with Canadian politics, he was more apt (to keep an even balance between the contending parties. The Prime Minister concluded with a tribute to Countess Grey's efforts on behalf of the poor and lowly.
