Hearst is suing the New York Times for 100,000 dollars for publishing Mayor Gaynor's speech accusing Hearst of tampering with the reproduction of a 48,000 dollars cheque paid by the city to a Tammany lawyer. Hearst published the reproduction for the purpose of suggesting that Mayor Gaynor was using the- city funds to repay Tammany for support at his election.
