SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS

A FERVID DEBATE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received May 2, 11.55 p.m. Pretoria, May 2. An extraordinary controversy is proceeding in the Transvaal Parliament as to whether members are entitled to £3OO for the present session of about sixteen days, despite being summoned as for an extraordinary session, for which the legal pay would be £lO plus 40s a sitting. When the Government resolved to prorogue, Mr. Smuts unexpectedly moved, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick seconded, and the Lower House unanimously carried a motion in favor of the payment of £3OO.

_ Finding that a number of Senators objected, Mr. Smuts refrained from introducing the motion to the Senate or introducing legislation.
