From the publishers, Messrs. Chandler and Co., we have received a copy of a pamphlet which contains in a handy and compact form much information section of the public which interests it-self in the Auckland goldmining companies. In the .preface the history of stocfcbroking is -briefly sketched, and here we learn that the Auckland Stock Exchange, established in 1872, has now a membership of forty, under the chairmanship of Mr. G. A. Buttle. The near proximity of important mining areas of considerable extent makes the Auckland Exchange a centre for the whole Dominion. A series of articles deals with the history of goldmining in the Auckland province, the fields being treated separately, and the very interesting, detailed, yet concise information is supplemented iby maps and plans showing the location of the centres of operations of the scores of companies whose shares are quoted on the Exchange. It is interesting to notice that Coromandel is the oldest and most northern goldfield in New Zealand, for it was here, in October, 1852, that the first gold in New Zealand was discovered by a Mr. Charles Ring. His quartz, and a certain amount of fine detailed gold, were obtained from the bed of the Whangarahi Creek, near the base of the Tokatea Hill, but it was not until 28th -Tune, 1862, that Coromandel was declared a goldfield. These particiflars we gleaned from the pamphlet under notice, which is the ■most comprehensive pamphlet vet issued in regard to the Auckland mining areas generally.
