STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
| (From Our Resident Correspondent.) ! Stratford, Last Night. ' The Borough Council has certainly taken precautions to protect the interests of the ratepayers when the yards j at present leased by Messrs Young,' Hol>bs and Co. are oll'ered at auction, provided there is competition. It is stated that another linn arc after the yards. If anything like a fair rental of | the land is secured, it is very certain that hy the end of the second term the | yards will have attained a very hiijh j value for the purpose for which they are used. The central position has advantages and disadvantages, and as the . town grows the experience of other ccn- > tres of population will be undergone; the yards will be .shifted to another site j less ' valuable and further away from j the business portion of the town. The | present site will in years to come be • particularly valuable for residential purposes, and it might have been better had the Council put the yards on a short lease. The Stratford Golf Cluf> opened the; season to-dav when a mixed loursome was played, the winners being Miss Fussell and Dr. Menzies, with a nett score of 6S, handicap 3. j The football match between the Strat-j ford and Eltham senior teams proved anj interesting game, and despite the earliness of the season good form was shown' by iboth teams. Stratford won by 'l2 points (4 ties) to 3 (a try). Mr J. McAlister, the well-known photographer, is showing his-practical sympathy with the movement of the Tara-j naki Union to establish a Bayly Mem-' orial Scholarship by offering to take all the local football teams and hand over the gross receipts from the sale of) photos to the Union. With visiting teams who have their photos taken h# will give haJf the proceeds. It is to be hoped that the local teams will enable the Union to profit by the generous offer of Mr. McAlister. ! Now that the Mayoral election .ias become a thing of the past the public* are considering whcrtliey snail support i for the vacancy on the Council. Of; yesterday's campaign it is the general! opinion that the excellent organisation j of the Masters' faction had a great deal to do with the majority. Nothing was too small to receive attention, and as one of the hardest workers expressed himself. "When the roll was closed we knew we had done all we eould; if we were beaten, we were ibeaten, and that was the end o- F it." ■Mr. Masters, who came to Stratford for the day of the election, has returned to New Plymouth, and will take at least another fortnight's holiday before re- 1 , turning. Everybody is pleased to hear: that Mr. Masters is rapidly recovering. ]
