IMPRESSIONS OF HIS JOURXEYINGS. ( By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. London, April 27. i Lord Kitchener has arrived at Southampton, where he met with,an enthusiastic reception. Interviewed regarding New Zealand and Australia, he said they were places of the greatest possible interest. He was highly impressed with all he saw. The people had shown the greatest keenness in putting their defences on a more satisfactory footing. No doubt it was their intention to make great improvements. He regretted he had not time to visit Canada, but it would have been a poor compliment to hurry through the Dominion. He was much impressed ■with the Japanese army and the general activity and energy displayed in all departments of Japanese life.

Lord Knollys, representing King Edward, Lord Roberts, and the Prince of Wales, with others, welcomed Lord Kitchener at AYaterloo station, London. Lord Kitchener, interviewed, said ho was very pleased with what he saw in Australia and New Zealand. Asked if he thought the period of training under the Defence Act was sufficient, he replied: "I do not think you must cross-examine me on that point. I can only say. as in my memoir "dum, that Australasia has splendid material iwhereof to make an armv."
Asked whether any exception was taken regarding the cost, lie replied: "Xo; it surely is not a large sum for a prosperous country like Australia to find. She can bear that very well."
