Though the brigade was promptly on' the scene, the fire, fanned by the wind', had got a strong hold, and the building, with its contents—two expresses and a dray—were demolished, a lorry, standing just outside, havMig been wheeled away just in time The horses were housed in a Shed a short distance away towards the beach.
The lire spread to a neighboring shed. used as a stable liy the Sash and Door Company, and this was soon ablaze. From this point the distance was not tar to the back 'parts of several residences, which for a time seemed doomed. 1 ut the brigade, who went about their work in a cool and workmanlike manner, concentrated their attention oft this burning mass, getting t\ro good ■heads of water to play, and though blinded by smoke and affected hy the intense heat, they soon got at close i|uarters and obtained mastery, leaving the residences,
Owing to the early hour we were unable to ascertain particulars of the insurances, if there are any. We arc given to understand, however, that the Express Company had a cover over its running gear. r
'Flip origin of the fire is unknown. Two mysterious outbreaws within a couple of days is rather disquieting. It may -lie but a coincidence. It ia to bo hoped it te.
