ENGLISH ÆRONAUTS
THE DAILY MAIL PRIZE. ADVENTURES OF WRIGHT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received April 25, 12.55 a.m. London, April 24. Aeronauts competed for the Daily Mail prize of £IO,OOO to fly from London to Manchester.,in twenty-four hours. jWright was allowed two stops—one at Rugby and another at Crewe.
Farman assisted Lane in a new type of Farman biplane with a monoplane tail.
Wright started in fine weather, and was out of sight in four minutes. Motor cars were hopelessly outpaced, although they made admirable speed. 'The altitude of 1000 feet was occasionally reached, and the pace oi sixty miles an hour was attained.
Wright's airship overhauled several trains and descended at a selected place at Rugby, circling round easily before settling.
Lord and Lady Denbigh and others welcomed the aeronauts, who complained of the high wind and bitter cold. Enthusiastic ladies divested themselves of their -cloaks, -muffs and boas, asd gave them to the fliers.
They breakfasted and soared again, landing between Tamworth and Lichfield, exhausted with the intense cold and high winds. Sleeping for a few hours they again ascended, but over Tamworth the engine stopped for thirty seconds and was corrected, but again developed faults. A strong head wind was -blowing, and Wright descended, -hoping to start at 3 o'clock on Sunday morning, expecting to reach Manchester at the specified time. Wright's mechanists, in a motor car, came to grief on a steep hill at Kilsby. One of them was seriously injured. A later messages states that a gale ■prevented A-V-right proceeding.
