AUSTRALIAN COMMANDANT
COLONEL KIRKPATRICK/S AP POINTMENT.
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, Sydney, Saturday.
Colonel Kirkpatriek has been engaged for four years at a- salary of £ISOO per annum and house allowance. He is a native of Canada, and has had a brilliant career. Melbourne, Saturday. There is considerable indignation here, among military officers over Colonel Kirkpatriek's appointment. Several Labor members have also expressed disapproval, their criticism being Abased on the idea that the appointment was arranged after the Government knew it was defeated, and also on the objection to importing an officer for the post.
A COMMENT. Received April 24, 5.5 p.m. London, April 23. The Morning Post states that Colonel Kirkpatriek's appointment is another indication of the serious attention Australia is now disposed to give to military organisation. It was natural, but hardly logical, that national pride before insisted on the inspector-general being an Australian officer, but that idea is now abandoned.
