POWELKA.
A .meeting of ratepayers of the district was Iheld in thq Waitui Schoolroom 0:1 Thursday evening to discuss the question of erecting a bridge across the
Manganui river at Bristol road. There was a large attendance of ratepayers. Mr. Harverbier presided. Mr. Trimble, chairman of the M.oa Boad Board, was present, and explained the method of raising a loan. It was estimated'that a concrete bridge would cost £2->OO, whilst a swing bridge could be erected for about £ISOO. This would also provide the requiring filling 011 the Waitui side. After some discussion it was ■proposed by Mr. IJakewell and seconded by Mr. L. Saltier, that steps be taken to raise a. loan not to exceed £l.lOO. The motion was carried. It was also decided to ask the settlers on the Inglewood side of the river to raise a separate loan (0 provide the filling and metalling 011 that side of the river. It is estimated that the swing bridge that is proposed to be erected will carrv a load of about eight tons. Some desultory discussion took place on the question of striking a special rate to improve the Kflimata road, but nothing definite was arrived at. There is no doubt, however, that the opening of this swing bridge will lake a lot of trall'ic oil' the Kaimata road, as it will con-iderablv lessen the time required to drive from Waitui to Inglewood.
