HOMING

The New Plymouth East Flying Club have, during the past week, decided two events for young birds. The first race was the "Novel Interval," from Wanganui, the birds competing .being those nominated by individual members two months prior to the race, when eight members signified their intention to compete in the event. Seven members hampered their 'birds, which were kindly liberated by Mr. C. Rylan-d, each at an interval of ten minutes. On account of the rough weatner prevailing the birds ■were detained one hour -beyond stated time of liberation, the lirst bird liberated carrying home tlie following message:— "Strong northerly wind, with heavy rain; too rough to liberate at stated

time; liberated one hour later." In consequence of the prevailing weather only slow times were recorded, although all birds homed the same day. The following are the results. —H. J. Moverley's "Royal Salute," 3hr. 6min., 1; W. Bransgrove's "Bective," 3hr. lymin., 2; James Bros.' "Peerless," 3hr. 37min., 3; C. R. Wright's "Zeal and ia," 3hr. 41min. lOsec., 4. The winner takes a silver-mounted jam-dish, being the first of the club's trophies competed for this season. On Thursday afternoon a flock race ■was held from Aramoho, a distance of 83 miles air-line, the event being confined to second hamper or late-bred birds. The weather conditions were favora'ule, and the majority of birds homed well. The placed birds were:—H. J. Moverley's "Wilson," 2hr. lOmin. 50sec., 1; C. R. Wright's "Silver Speck," 2hr. ilmin., 2; W. H. Boulton's "Hinemoa," 2hr. II min. 20sec., 3; 11. Arnoldt's "Sea-wave," 2hr. 12min. 25sec., 4. The next race will be held on Thursday next from Greatford, and any bird hatched last season will be eligible to compete.
