The pasengers rushed on deck in their night attire, but the captain persuaded many to return to the cabins to dress themselves. After ascertaining the depth of water in the forehold, boats •vrere lowered and the passengers taken ashore. The crew remained on deck.

Motor-cars, pianos, and machinery •were jettisoned, but the Minnehaha was not floated.
