THE PUBLIC SAFETY.
AND THE AUCKLAND TRAMS. OPENING OF ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Presg Aiioeiatdoo. Auckland, Monday. The Royal Commission appointed to enquire and report on the suitability of the brakes used on the Auckland trams was opened this morning. The points for enquiry are: Whether, having regard to grades oh the tramways and speeds the cars travel, to the congested street traffic and the safety of the public, the system of brakes already adopted, or any of them, are suitable, efficient, and sufficient; if said brakes are not suitable and sufficient, what other brake would you recommend? and generally to enquire into any matter connected with the subject of the enquiry or regarding the necessity of any new legislation in respect thereof. It was stated that the Tram Company maintained that the existing brakes are perfectly safe and effective, but is prepared to alter the system, not because it is inadequate, but because it recognised the desirability and necessity to work harmoniously with the Government and their employees.
