The 3.30 p.m. train from Woouville yesterday had a very narrow escape t from derailment in the Manawatu 'Gorge. Just as 'the train emerged from the second tunnel from Aslihurst j the driver became aware of a large . body travelling down the hillside at a tremendous speed. He immediately appiied the brakes, but this did not stop the train in time, and the engine I crashed into a huge ti - <"> trunk, fifteen ] feet long and live feet in diameter, jus't ' as it landed ou the line. The permanent way was badly torn ' up, and the front- of the engine dainI «ged. ' A gang of permanent way men from I the Gorge dislodged the tree and re-j | paired tlie line, enabling the train to ; continue its journey. The engine is j so severely battered that it had to be I replaced by another engine at Ashhurst. It is extremely fortunate that no worse disaster hefcil, as had the tree j strfick the engine broadside it is possible the whole train might have been hurled into the river below.
