BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Now Plymouth Borough Council was held last night. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Tiseh) presiding, and Councillors E. Doekrill, F. C. J. Beilringer, F. E. Wilson, Joseph West, A. E. Watkins, James Clarke, J. F. Hooker, H. J. Gilbert, and G. W. Browne. WELCOME. His Worship welcomed Cr. Clarke 'upon his first appearance at the Council table after his election to till the vacancy caused by the resignation of one of the Central Ward representatives, Cr. Bishop. SUPPLIES. The following tenders were accepted for the annual supplies, as recommended by the borough engineer:—Gig hire, M, Jones; horse - shoeing, M. Sliivnan; waterworks and general hardware, Bellringer Bros., Ltd.; coal and firewood, J. Ward and Son; kerosene, oils, etc., D. Berry and Co.; cement, Bellringer Bros., Ltd. Two tenders were received late, and were not opened. A LIBERAL OFFER. Messrs. G. W. Fartnell and G. H. Maunder, representing the Good Templars' Order in New "Plymouth, wrote that they were prepared to allow the Council to remove some 1200 yards of spoil from the site of their proposed hall on the corner of Courtenay-street and Carrington-road. If removed within three months, and according to levels to be supplied, they would charge only ft penny a yard.—Accepted. SUBURBAN WATER-SUPPLY. Messrs. Buckman and Weston waited on the Council -in respect of the notice they had received of the intention to cut 6ff the water-supply from their houses in Belt-road, and asking on what terms the Council would lay a 3-inch pipe.—lt transpired that the present pipe was paid for by other propertyowners, and they were entitled to say whether there should he any addition to the number of consumers.—The deputation will he supplied with the information required, and in the meantime the Council will defer action.

Cr. Bellringer said the people outside the borough could easily escape troubles like these. The remedy was simplejoin the borough. GENERAL. All reports, as published in yesterday's Issue, were adopted. Mr. F. Messenger, architect, applied on behalf of Messrs. Burgess, Fraser and Co. for a permit to repair the building in Devon-street formerly occupied by Messrs. Jenkinson and Co. and damaged by the recent gale.—lt transpired that the proposal was to set up the building as a single-storeyed structure. Upon the by-laws being consulted, it was discovered that the Council had no power to grant this permit in the brick area, and it was decided to inform the applicant accordingly. A resolution was passed instructing the engineer to complete the footpaths in Queen-street.—Cr. Hooker complained that there were too many unfinished jobs about the town. Mr. J. Roberts' application to be allowed to use part of the septic tank site for storing vehicles on Saturdays was referred back to the applicant to apply to Messrs. Burgess. Fraser and Co., who have the use of the reserve fn compensation for an easement, the Conn- > cil rafsing no objection. J
