One of the most enjoyable and successful soi'ial functions ihat has ever t;iken place in Xe\v Plymouth, if not in -Taranaki, was the "At liome : ' given by •Alr=. Xowton Ki;i«- to her friends yesterday afternoon in celebration of the forthcoming marriage of her daughter! with Dr. Allen, of Dunedin. Between five and six hundred guests responded to the invitation. The weather could not possibly have been better, and the gardens and grounds of "Brooklands" Jooked just as lovely as ever, despite the severe "buffeting" to which they were subjected by last week's gale. The Garrison Hand were in attendance, and discoursed a very enjoyable programme .of music. Afternoon tea was served under the "spreading chestnut tree," n»e tree which is one of the sights of the bcuitiful grounds. The hostess, Mrs. 'Newton King, received in a lovely gown of national blue charmeuse, cream lace yoke, black hat, with tiny white roses under brim. Miss King wore golden brown liberty silk, with cream tucked vest and sleeves, finished, with large brown buttons; white feni her hoa and brown hat with feather-;. Mrs. Ziele (Xapier), sister of Dr. Allen, was dressed in a lovely gr«sy spotted ehill'on over ttill'eta, tied with pnle gold guimpc, grey hat finished with gold trimming. Mrs. Dodgshun wore pale green voile, tied with bands of reseda green satin, cream tucked net yoke, black hat. Among the guests were the following: Mrs. G. Tisch, black chiffon taffeta, cream lace vest; black hat with feathers. Mrs. Henry Weston, biscuit - colored silk, white embroidered linen coat; saxe blue hat, swathed with brown chiffon, and brown wings. Miss Capel. green eolienne, cream lace vest; hat with shaded roses. Miss Cutfield. cream satin cloth costume; rose pink hat, lined with molecolored velvet. Mrs. A. Alexander, grey fawn muslin, cream yoke finished with black velvet; black and white hat. Miss Rennell, cream coat and skirt, saxe blue hat, with pale blue feathers. Mrs. Hempton, senior, black. Miss Hempton, .grey costume, cream yoke finished with black, cream hat. Mrs. J. Hempton, navy blue costume, trimmed with bands of velvet, pale mauve hat.
