LIME-LIGHT LECTURE. A somewhat small audience was treated to an intellectual and instructive lectur« at the Parish Hall on Wedaesdaj evening ,when the Rev. the Hon. Yarde-Buller took the plattorm. The lecturer was introduced by the Rev. Thomas, th« Anglican minister, and illustrated his remarks with lime-llgat lantern slides. The lantern was manipulated by Mr. R. J. Frewin, with entire ■uecess. The subject of the address was "Jack and our Navy." First he treated the Empire as a whole and the absolute necessity of naval supremacy and afterwards continued with the units of the Navy, the ships, and lastly the tars. Some excellent slides were shown of battle-ships, torpedo-destroyers, cruisers and boat drill, accompanied by lucid explanations from the lecturer. Ships .■were also shown in the process of coal.inff and ammunitioning. The Rev. Buller informed the audience that under the present system all work of this sort wag carried on in the form of competitions and time, records, etc., kept and this did much towards fostering a feeling of healthy rivalry among the various crews. He spent a few moments on the history of the "dear old flag," the Union Jack, but explained that it had not "braved a thousand years the battle and the breeze," as was rumored, since it had not come into being until the year 1801. He touched briefly on the dangers of the sea, mentioning rocks, uncharted reefs, sunken mines and fogs as instances. He then passed on to the gunnery, and explained that here, also, prizes were offered and competitions organised which did much to improve the •tandard of the shooting. Perhaps the most interesting «lide was a photo of the inside of the barrel of a twelve-inch gun, showing the rifling. He described Jack as the largest hearted and most religious of men and went on to point out the benefits to be derived from the appointment of a chaplain on the New Zealand training ship, which course he strongly advised. The Rev. Thomas, on behalf of the audience thanked the Rev. the Hon. Yarde-Buller for his lecture, and stated that a collection would be taken in aid of the Chatham Navy 'JToiise, England, and the Auckland Seamen's Home.
