TURF TOPICS. .(By "Moturoa.") The Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Golden Loop has been paid up for in the Railway Handicap, but will have to shake his figure to have a clianca with Perle d'Or and company. Jockey H. Cairns will ride Tumut and Osiris in their Trentkant engagements, and their chances will be materially strengthened thereby. On Auckland form Emblem does not appear to be badly treated in the Tinakori Hack Handicap with 8s t 21b. Mr. C. Major's horse'can fly a bit! Canterbury trainer Mason's team for the Wellington meeting comprises Armlet, Perle d'Or, and Danube. The trio are reported to be very well, and may pick up a race or two before they return home.

Whatakura, who tops the handicap, finished second to Exmoor in the First Hurdles at Trentham last year. According to some people, Gold Bird is the only "bird" in the race.

The Thompson Handicap .promises to provide a stirring contest. The presence of sucli doughty performers as North-East, Armlet, Equitas, and Tumut will ensure a good betting race, if nothing else. Lord Kelvin is reported to be going weil. and will have to be at his test to give Tenterhook a battle in the first few furlongs of the Plunket Nursery. Another smart one engaged is British Maid, who won at Tauherinikau.

Royal Marine is on the up-grade itunin, and will have the services of R. Hutch in the Silverstream Hack Handicap to-day. Ureal reports come to hand of the good work done by Idealism, and as the field includes several recent winners an interesting race may be looked forward to.

•Jockey A. Olliver rode Aborigine to victory in the Thompson Handicap last year. Will lie repeat the dose on Equitas 'to-davY

Apart from the others engaged in the Thompson Handicap, the meeting between Armlet and Kquitas over a mile snviikl lie worth going ft long way to witness. Until fliers are in the best of niok, as their recent running at Eiccarton and Ellerslie respectively testifies. A battle roval between the pair 'would be a tine sight. A big crowd still ligure in the Challenge Stakes, many of them probably through their owners' oversight. When the field is boiled down to actual starters there will be very few in it, and Penates, Ciold Lace, and Form by w'l! iirebably carry most of the goldens.

Sid Eeid. who broke his collarbone at Shannon a short while back, -was in (lie saddle again at Ellerslie, and roue Dawn to victory in the Welter Handicap.

Waipaku was much talked of before disappoint in,';- ,punter- at Eiccarton, and hopes are expressed in some quarters that thn Foxton horse will run up to h.is splendid track form at Trentham this week.

Krpiitas was considered unluckv at Ellerslie. and then ran second to Wainri in the Faster Handicap, tins mile being left behind in lmin 4(lsee. Aborigine ran lmin 43sec in the Thompson last year, and Trentham is probably a couple of -econds slower than Ellerslie. but if Iviuitas runs up to his usual Wellington form -'lire of the scrags amongst the light-weights will.be hard pushed to keen up with the dust-clouds. The N>\v Zealand St, Leper Stakes, run over a mile and three-quarters on Saturday next, has drawn a poor crowd. Of the ten engaged, probably only Milan and Kilwinning have any pretensions to running out the full distance in decent time. A small field may lie expected in this event also.
