The Vatican authorities are astounded'that ex-President Roosevelt published correspondence which was regarded as diplomatic documents. Mr. Roosevelt's secretary, who is a Roman Catholic, interviewed Cardinal Merry del Val, who asked for a guarantee that Mr. Roosevelt would not visit the Methodist Church in Rome, which, Cardinal Merry del Val stated, was countenancing a most offensive campaign of calumnious detraction against the Pope. The secretary refused to give a guarantee, saying that Mr. Fairbanks' address to Roman Methodists was the real cause of the Vatican's displeasure.
