NAVAL RESERVISTS STRIKE
COSTLY FOR FRENCH SHIPPING. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received April 5, 11.40 p.m. Paris, April 5. Naval reservists at Marseilles declared a twenty-four hours' strike as a protest against the prosecution of a dozen deserters. The authorities declined to be intimidated by the reservists, who thereupon decided that the ships should not leave Marseilles until the demands were satisfied. The crews will leave the vessels and come ashore. Cargo aggregating 600,000 tons and outward mails are detained. The Messageries Maritimes Company applied for bluejackets to complete their crews. The reservists appealed to other ports to join the strike. Up to the present the strikes have cost Marseilles £4,000.000.
