BREACHES OF THE GAMING ACT. By Telegraph.—Pres*' Association. Wellington, Monday. A series of prosecutions arising out of allegations of breaches of the. Gaming Act, against the New Zealand Times Company ami Pierce Freeth, were heard in Court to-day. It was explained by counsel for defendant that the original scheme was that subscribers to the Times were to cut out certain advertisements, which were placed in a ballot-box, and the winner awarded a prize for the selection of the advertisement corresponding with one previously chosen by an independent person. The question" arose whether such n scheme was a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act.

The defendant company decided to plead guilty to two charges, and agreed to pay the Crown's expenses. Mr. Freeth was fined 30s and the company Is and costs.
