LAST WEEK'S GALE
THE DAMAGE AT GiSBORNE. By Tele,<raph.—Press Asuuci/it • Gisborne, Monday. Extensive landslides as a result of the storm in the vicinity of the Tnahine lighthouse, erected by the Government last year on a high headland near the approach to Poverty Jiay, have caused apprehensions for : the safety of the structure. The caretaker removed for safety 011 Saturday, and the Harbor Board proposes to remove his cottage to .another site on more stable ground. Lust week's flood caused serious damage to the heathvork oi the municipal water supply, which has been cut off' for several days. The Council is setting up pumps near Te Arai to provide a temporary supply. The railway service, which has been interrupted since Wednesday, is expected be resumed this afternoon.
STEAMER DRIYEX OUT OF HER COURSE. Auckland, Monday. The Patea Shipping Company's Kiripaka, which left Wellington for Patea on Tuesday, was unable "to make Patea. owing to the fierce gale. She also failed to reach New Plymouth, and has called in at Onehunga to replenish supplies. The engineer was reduced to wood fuel. Had the gale continued much longer, the consequences would have been very serious.
