DISTRICT NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents.) KORU. The gale on Wednesday night was the nftTst furious that ever visited this district. It played havoc with cowsheds, milk-stands, pig-styes and fences. It! paid particular attention to Mr Symons' sawmill, on the Upper Carrington road, completely dismantling the mill, and damaging the plant to the extent oi £3O or £4O. The Koru mill huildings suffered considerably, but the machinery sustained no damage. Mr. Carlsons house was unroofed. Mr. Smart's house was stripped of its iron, himself and family having to seek the shelter of a neighbor who was more fortunately situated. Mr. Mace's cowshed and stable were Mown away and a new gig was considerably damaged. Two trees fell across Mr. Green's cowshed, crushing the roof in. The hotelkeeper at Oakura lost a valuable horse by a tree falling on it. A bedroom window in Mr. Raill's house was stove in, the hed-cloth-ing was blown off, and the slumberers ■were rudely awakened. A couple of Backs securely nailed on met the emergencies and the occupants of the room returned to their virtuous.' bunks and slept the gale out. Our sawing and chopping champions, Sullivan and Carlson, did* well at Okato and Oakura sports by winning the big money at both places. The former is reported to have put up a fresh record in the single-handed sawing at Tariki on Easter Monday. A would-'be cham- | pion, who has been amongst the also- ■ starteds in past events, is reported to ■be burning midnight oil with a wet cloth on his head trying to charge his axe-handle with electricity, and, having failed, is now in communication with Edison.

The many friends of Mr. T. W. Mace will be pleased to hear that he is sufficiently recovered to 'be able to leave the Npr Plymouth Hospital, where he has undergone a painful operation. Everyone in the district is glad that the genial old veteran is back amongst us again, hale and hearty. Thanks »rf due to the hospital. staff for their skilful treatment.

TARATA. Mr. and Mrs. R. Pennington were farewelled by their friends on Thursday evening, the function talcing the form, of a concert and dance. There was a big attendance. During "the evening a present of a T>ufse"was made to Mrs. Pennington, which Mr Pennington suitably acknowledged. The family have recently sold their farm and are shifting to the Waitara district.
